Puff Pastry Breakfast (24 Oct 2009)

Got some leftover puff pastry dough? Why not turn it into a nice breakfast for two!

Just roll out the pastry in a well-floured surface and form it into a rectangle shape. Work on the short end of the rectangle and start layering the filling. Make sure to leave about 1/3 of an inch around the filling for sealing the pastry.

In this case, we started with a cheddar cheese in the bottom. We added some scrambled eggs, chives, salt and pepper. Then it was topped off with pieces of sliced ham.

Brush the edges of the pastry with water or Fold over the other half of the pastry until it completely covers the filling. You may need to do a little bit of stretching to make the edges of the dough match. Then crimp the edges with a fork to seal all that yummy goodness.

Bake in the oven at 400 degrees until golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes.

Et voila!

Let it cool for about 5 minutes before cutting into serving portions.

Happy Thanksgiving!

This year we decided to skip the traditional turkey and just go for two regular roasted chickens. There was just too many ‘toos’ in the turkey, as in “too big”, “too much”, “too messy” and not to mention “too much work.”

October 2009 Thanksgiving07

The table is set.

We just roasted the chicken by mixing lots of butter with rosemary, salt and pepper and then putting wads of it between the skin and the breasts. And the drippings of course didn’t go to waste. It turned into this rich and velvety gravy.

October 2009 Thanksgiving04

It turned out perfectly!

We roasted some baby potatoes and dressed it with extra virgin olive oil, rosemary, salt and lots of garlic.

October 2009 Thanksgiving01

Nice and shiny.

And after seeing this in Cook Country TV, we had to make these perfect popovers. It was fun watching them rise and turn into these golden brown pieces of bread.

October 2009 Thanksgiving10

Puffy...

October 2009 Thanksgiving19

... and hollow. Perfect!

Here it is! A piece of everything assembled on a beautiful plate.

October 2009 Thanksgiving16

It all goes well with a side dish of peas, pearl onions and ham cooked together with some butter salt and sugar.

Last but not the least is this. A dumpling.

October 2009 Thanksgiving20

Dumpling with a twist.

Apple Dumpling that is. Very easy to make and makes a wonderful individual dessert.

October 2009 Thanksgiving22

Great with a side of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of apple cider syrup.

This is just the perfect dessert to end a perfect meal.

October 2009 Thanksgiving24

I want another one.

I know I certainly have a lot to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

En Route to Hermès Calgary

Oh yes! We braved the cold, windy weather and went on a day trip last Saturday to visit the newly-opened Hermès store in Calgary. After 15 minutes of going around the ‘one-way’ maze in downtown Calgary and dodging all the road repairs, we’re glad to have finally found a parking spot close to Holt Renfrew. The walk to the store was exciting as we didn’t know what to expect after our last visit and the place was still under renovation.

We proceeded to go inside Holt Renfrew and I must say the renovations were pretty impressive. It has a lot more space and a few of the luxury brands have certainly expanded like Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. We finally made it to Hermès and while the store is a little small, the place is certainly beautiful and carries a good selection of goods. By that I mean scarves, ties, porcelain, and of course, lots of leather goods. From key chains to agendas, belts, wallets and bags. Lots of bags of different colours and sizes! I saw some Kellys, Haut à Courroies (HAC), Marwari, Birkin, and other popular bag styles. There’s even a red crocodile Birkin with diamond-studded clasp and lock which usually marks the opening of a store.

Here are some pictures I took of the store.

Aaahhh.. my dishes! I still want the bread and butter plates and soup plates.

I was interested in a few pieces they have in the store but the place got really packed with clients and the sales associates were all busy. (Yes, my dear friends. I know some of you may find it hard to believe but I did walk away from the store without buying anything.) We just decided to go back another day. Besides, we still had to hit a few more stores in Calgary before heading back to Edmonton.

However, we didn’t leave the store empty-handed. We got something for free from Hermès. That’s right. It was free! The gracious greeter in the store gave each one of us a balloon and a lollipop. A golden horse balloon and a big orange lollipop to be precise.

Our horse had to be held down. It was too windy.

He's nicely galloping in our living room.

It's too pretty to eat but I have got to try one.

They were certainly eye catching give-aways. Right after we got out of the store, people walking around Holt Renfrew were asking us where we got them.

Seems like the Hermès opening was a hit and it’s here to stay, hopefully expand to Edmonton. It was a nice visit and certainly wouldn’t be the last one.

Promise.

That’s right beautiful citizens of Alberta. The newest Hermès store is opening in Calgary on Wednesday, October 7th (which is tomorrow). It is located in the newly-expanded 151,000 square foot Holt Renfrew in downtown, which is also officially opening tomorrow.
