The September Issue: Anna Wintour & The Making of Vogue

Move over Miranda Priestly. The real ‘Devil Wears Prada’ has arrived.

Hello Anna Wintour!

AnnaWintour

Anna Wintour

The documentary by R. J. Cutler chronicles Anna and her team of editors creating the September 2007 issue of Vogue. The said issue was and remains the biggest ever, weighing over four pounds and a record of 840 pages.

Watch the video trailer:

Whether you love her or hate her, you gotta give it to the girl. She’s been at the helm of American Vogue for 20 years where she held the position of Editor-in-Chief since 1988. In the cutthroat world of fashion, she has certainly remained strong and tough while maintaining a firm grip over the fashion industry. Do we really expect anything less?

The documentary is now playing in New York and will be out on September 11th in Los Angeles and select cities. Of course in Canada, “select cities” most likely refers to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

That’s all.

Lolly-Pies

We had a potluck last Tuesday and I totally forgot about it the day before so I had to quickly make something at home. Hhhhmmm… So what did I make?

Lolly-Pies!

LollyPies10

Want one?

Good thing a friend posted a link on her Facebook wall. I clicked on the link and found this blog called Luxirare. I’m telling you, this blogger is super creative in whatever she makes and posts. Between you and me, I think she’s from another world or a different dimension. I’m not kidding! Here is what she made and the title of her blog post is Float.

Anyway, I digressed. So Luxirare made these perfect little pies on a stick and I knew I had to try it someday. Well, I thought “why not make it for the potluck?” I didn’t know whether it’s going to be easy or not but I definitely had to try it.

I just used a store-bought pie dough as suggested by Luxirare. It’s quick, it’s good and best of all, no mess. I decided to use the strawberry and raspberry jam that we have in the fridge as I didn’t have the time to make the filling from scratch.

LollyPies2

Ingredients and equipment

I placed the pie dough on a parchment paper so it’s easier to managed. Then I rolled it out as thin as possible so it’s not just going to be a baked pie dough. I knew it was thin enough since it got somewhat transparent.

LollyPies3

Rolled as thin as possible.

Next, the lollypop sticks and a small amount of filling are placed in the centre of the dough. We have a thick raspberry jam that wasn’t so runny. However, the strawberry jam has a bit more of a runny jelly so I made sure to put in most of the fruit.

LollyPies4

Easy on the filling!

We also made little cut-outs of maple leaf to add some pizazz to each pie.

LollyPies6

Pretty cute, aren't they?

I brushed the other side with egg wash (egg whites diluted with a little bit of water) and carefully crimped the edges with a dessert fork so as not to push out the filling. This is the trickiest and hardest part. Then I brushed the top with more egg wash and placed the maple leaf in the centre.

LollyPies5

The tricky part -- sealing the filling!

LollyPies7

The moment of truth.

Cook it under 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, cool them on wire racks and voila!

LollyPies9

Nicely browned and flaky.

After the pies have completely cooled, I placed them in a container filled with sugar. It helps to keep them in place.

LollyPies8

I had to try one. It's good!

So were they pretty easy to make? I would say so. You just have to have the time, patience and the will to not put too much filling. Seriously!

I say give it a try!

My wishbook!

I just received my copy of the latest issue of Le Monde d’Hermès (No. 55), a tie catalog and scarf booklet for the Fall-Winter 2009. It’s covered in luscious lemon yellow strips and the other catalogs are colourful as well.

The new catalog showcases Hermès’ new Fall-Winter collection which continues this year’s theme “Beautiful Escapes”. Here are some of the things I like in the new collection:

HCoat1

I love the brown leather straps on this coat.

The Ovni clutch

As for the tie catalog, the one in the middle certainly caught my eyes. It’s a combination scarf and tie. Gorgeous, isn’t it?

Hermès Ovni Pouch in black box calfskin

I just checked out the recently updated interactive site of Hermès and look what I found!

Ovni Pochette

I like!

I love, love, love this pouch! This would be perfect for overnight trips or a quick change in the office. Of course the gazillion dollar question is how much is this baby. I don’t know (yet!)  but I’m sure it would be quite a few mortgage payments. Oh yeah, the briefcase is a separate item!

And here’s the video clip from the interactive site.

The Ovni pouch in black box calfskin with its Sac à dépêche in black trekking cowhide.

Excuse me while I wipe the drool off on my laptop.
