Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” – US Army Style!

Look at this awesome Lady Gaga video created by a few American soldiers with their own rendition of Telephone.

Just over a week ago, a group of U.S. soldiers stationed in southwest Afghanistan posted a 3 minute, 45 second video of them dancing and lip syncing to Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.” For the first minute and a half, two soldiers are busting their best Gaga moves on camera, but soon there are eight soldiers, most of them dressed in their best Lady Gaga outfits, burning up the proverbial dance floor.

You can see photos of the entire cast in The Smoking Gun website.

It’s great to see these soldiers are taking some time to have fun.

I love MUJI

My good friend and former colleague, San and her hubby are going to Japan next week. So she asked me if I would recommend any stores or boutiques that sell clothes and accessories which are designed or made in Japan. I told her there are lots of interesting Japanese stores but there is nothing like MUJI.

The idea behind the brand is to eliminate wastefulness and their concept is simple — a fresh look at quality and price of truly useful quality goods with a no-label philosophy. I really love their minimalist approach in everything they make.

This is one of the more affordable stores that we kept going back to as they have multiple locations particularly in Tokyo and Kyoto.

They also have stores in other countries so every time we visit a country, we always try to find one since we collect their “City in a Bag” collectibles.

These are simple wooden blocks that depict famous landmarks or iconic symbols in popular cities like Paris, London and New York. Try guessing what cities are these sets.

Aside from these collectibles, I also purchased a few other items from our travels like this nice wool coat that fits me well, a bright orange belt, a simple board game and even some school items.

MUJI is a brand that practically carries a little bit of everything — from simple stationary and beautiful appliances to delicious food and stylish clothing. They even sell prefabricated houses that are beautiful, modern and simple. Seriously! Their house prices start around US $200,000.

While I did say they have several locations in other countries, unfortunately they do not have any in Canada. Also, the only six stores they have in US are all located in New York.

I wonder if there are any seat sales to the Big Apple?

Earth Day Inspiration: Ginkaku-ji

This special day reminded me of a garden we visited in Kyoto, Japan. It was in the Zen temple called Ginkaku-ji, the “Temple of the Silver Pavilion”. While the temple was closed for renovations during our visit, the gardens remained open to the public. It was definitely one of the most beautiful gardens we visited in Japan.

A portion of the Silver Pavilion undergoing renovations can be seen here.

A very popular part of the garden is the Sea of Silver Sand which is a large garden of white gravel. The gravel is raked into a large horizontal expanse known as the Sea of Silver Sand (Ginshadan) next to a distinctive cone-shaped mound called the Moon-Viewing Platform (Kôgetsudai). The precision and accuracy of the raking is astounding and the entire sand garden was so mesmerizing to look at!

Here are some more magnificent views of the garden.

The trees in the gardens were simply breathtaking and the rustling of the leaves were so calming.

One thing that we can’t help but notice was the different varieties of moss covering the grounds of the gardens. They made the gardens look very enchanting as you can see in some of the previous pictures.

And while one may think they just easily spread and are low maintenance, this particular groundskeeper totally changed our views on growing moss. The particular care and attention he gave these humble plants was truly amazing to watch. Before we knew it, there was a small crowd that joined us in watching him painstakingly pick out the dead moss and sweep the fallen leaves. Talk about devotion to duty!

Ah, I could only imagine having a relaxing and peaceful retreat like this in our backyard. Wishful thinking!

Happy Earth Day everyone!

‘Beaten Up’ T-Shirt by Bassike

I for one, am looking forward to summer and I am so ready to ditch the puffy jackets and wool socks. Let’s just say I’ve had enough of this cold weather and I’m ready to shed some layers. Anyway, once in a while I check out Oki-ni as they have a lot of great clothes, shoes and accessories for men.

Well, lo and behold! Look what I found.

Bassike Beaten-Up Basic T-Shirt

Interesting piece isn’t it? This ‘beaten up’ t-shirt comes with a ripped shoulder and chest detail. It’s great for that “hey, I just got mugged”
or “I just got into a bar fight and guess who won” look.

But wait, this basic white crew neck t-shirt doesn’t come cheap. It retails for about £79 (or approximately US$120). Hey, it’s finished with a raw hem and is made of 100% organic cotton jersey. It also comes in two additional colours, black and green.

Personally, I like it if I can pull it off and I think I may have a reason to finally bring out from the closet my well-worn and torn acid-washed jeans from the 80′s (which probably doesn’t fit anymore). Ah yes, reminds me of the good ‘ole days when I spent good money on jeans only to distress and tear them up.

I can just hear my mom saying “I can buy you the 3-pack Hanes t-shirt for $11 and do a better job at ripping them.”

Thoughts? Comments? Violent reactions?
