At least four people I know are visiting Japan this year and I must admit, it made me want to go back there again, specifically to this beautiful place.
Miyajima is a small island located southwest of Hiroshima. To get to the island, you have to take a ferry that departs from Hiroshima every 15 – 20 minutes. You can take the JR-operated boat if you have a JR Rail Pass, otherwise a round trip fare would cost around ¥340.
The most famous symbol of Miyajima is the majestic orange O-torii, or grand gate, which at high tide gives the illusion of “floating” over the water. The real name of the island is Itsukushima, but it is popularly known as Miyajima which means “Shrine Island”.
Not far from this torii gate is the Itsukushina Jinja which is considered a World Heritage Site. Like the O-torii, this shrine is also built over water and consists of multiple buildings that are connected by boardwalks which are all supported by pillars above the sea.
We were only there for an overnight stay, so after dropping off our baggage at the wonderful inn we stayed in, we hurriedly went out to do some more sightseeing while there was still some daylight left. It was the perfect time of the day for taking pictures.
First, we decided to go down the main street where the market and restaurants are. There were lots of students on field trips that day so it was busy and a little crowded.
Miyajima is also the best place to buy hot and fresh omiji manju, small cakes made in the shape of a maple leaf filled with sweet bean paste, custard, cheese and other variations.
We ended up getting a couple boxes but we can’t resist trying these battered and fried ones called age momiji. They can only be found in Miyajima. Mmmm!
After having a few snacks, we decided to explore more of the town. Outside the main street, the rest of the place is actually peaceful and serene.
By the way, be aware that deer wander freely through the streets and parks. They’re regarded as divine messengers of god. Although tame, they also very quickly convey the message that they want something to eat. So be careful of your food purchases, even the ones tucked inside your bag.
We really had a great time exploring this small town. Too bad we only planned to stay overnight which we regret as there were a few more interesting places we didn’t get to see like Mt. Misen since we ran out of time.
Hopefully someday we’ll be back.
